Letter from the chair
Northwestern has just completed the fall quarter, and we in the Department look forward to an exciting winter and spring. As many of you know, this is the time of year when we actively recruit both new faculty and the next cohort of Ph.D. students.
We have searches at the senior level in applied microeconomics, in development and in econometrics. We are conducting an open field search at the junior level, as we have in most years. The hires that result from these searches will help keep the department at the cutting edge of research in economics.

Alumni Spotlight
Casey Bloys (BA ’93) has been the president of HBO programming since 2016 and currently oversees HBO and Max originals. In October, Bloys returned to campus for a dialogue with School of Communication Dean E. Patrick Johnson to speak about his career and experience as an undergraduate at Northwestern.

REMEMBERING J. LANDIS MARTIN
Landis “Lanny” Martin ’68, ’73 J.D. (’02, ’07, ’08 P), Northwestern alumnus, life trustee, former chair of the Board of Trustees and one of the University’s most generous benefactors, passed away on September 1, 2023. He was 77 years old. A double alumnus, Martin earned his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1968 and his J.D. from Northwestern Law in 1973. Read more about his life and career.

This upcoming spring, the Department will be hosting two conferences: the Historical Lessons for Monetary and Financial Policy Conference, organized by Joel Mokyr and Walker Hanlon, and the Center for the Study of Industrial Organizations Conference, organized by Igal Hendel. We will also be hosting The Susan Bies Lecture on Economics and Public Policy featuring Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of The International Monetary Fund, in conversation with Lawrence Christiano.
On February 1, 2024, the Department will be hosting a lecture and reception celebrating the legacy of Dale Mortensen. The lecture will be given by Robert Shimer, Department Chair and the George J. Stigler Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at The University of Chicago. We hope that you can join us for this special event. If you plan to attend, please RSVP here.
